The Skin Benefits of Rosehip Oil

Rosehip Oil

Rosehip is the fruit of various rose plant species such as rosa moschata, rosa canina and rosa rubiginosa. Rosehip seed oil is rich in beta-carotene, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. It also contains around 0.0357% tretinoin, the most potent vitamin A.

Rosehip oil in skincare

Due to its skin regenerating properties, rosehip oil is one of the most popular skincare ingredients and widely used in face oils, lotions, creams and balms.

Rosehip Oil Benefits For Your Skin

1. Rosehip oil reduces the look of wrinkles and fine lines

Rosehip seed oil contains around 0.0357% tretinoin. Tretinoin is very effective at reversing signs of ageing. At a less than 0.05% concentration, tretinoin will not cause photosensitivity. Therefore, rosehip oil is generally safe for both day and night time use. An eight week clinical study showed that rosehip oil reduces fine lines and wrinkles on the crow's feet area.

2. Rosehip oil improves skin hydration and elasticity

The omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids in rosehip oil help strengthen skin barrier function, enhance skin's ability to retain moisture and improve skin elasticity.

3. Rosehip oil protects skin cells against environmental damage

Rosehip seed oil is rich in beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant which helps prevent skin damage caused by reactive oxygen species including free radicals.

4. Rosehip oil stimulates skin cell regeneration

Studies showed that rosehip oil speeds up skin cell regeneration. The oil extracted from the seeds of rosehip minimises scars and promotes radiant skin.

Can you use rosehip oil on its own?

Yes, you can use rosehip oil on its own; however, for better results look for skincare products which contain at least few active ingredients. Professional skincare formulators always combine some ingredients which work synergistically for best results.

Can All Skin Types Benefit From Rosehip Oil?

Rosehip oil is gentle enough to be used on most skin types with the exception for oily, acne-prone skin. Contrary to popular belief that rosehip oil is good for acne-prone skin, it may actually trigger the appearance of acne in some people. People with prominent signs of ageing such as wrinkles, lines and uneven skin tone will benefit most from rosehip oil.

Can you use rosehip oil on sensitive skin?

Yes, you can use rosehip oil on sensitive skin, however, always do a patch test before using a new product on sensitive skin.

Is rosehip oil suitable for both women and men?

Yes, both men and women can benefit from using skincare products containing rosehip oil.

Can you use rosehip oil during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Yes you can. The retinoid (vitamin A) content in rosehip oil is considered too low to cause a concern; hence, it is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Is there any ingredient recommended to be used together with rosehip oil?

Although rosehip oil on its own is effective, for best possible results, look for skincare products which also contain bakuchiol oil. Rosehip and bakuchiol oil work synergistically to provide even better results than rosehip oil alone.

When is the best time to use Products Containing Rosehip Oil?

It is generally safe to use rosehip oil during the day and at night depending on the other ingredients used in the products. Rosehip oil alone is not phototoxic so it doesn't make your skin sensitive to sun. The tretinoin content in rosehip oil is considered too low to cause photosensitivity.
