Hair Growth Cycle and Hair Loss
Hair on the scalp grows about a half inch per month or 6 inches per year. The growth cycle of a hair consists of 3 stages: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen.
1. Anagen (Growing) Stage
During Anagen Stage, the cells at the hair root are dividing rapidly to form a new hair. This new hair grows about a half inch per month and will continue to grow for 3 to 5 years.
2. Catagen (Transitional/Intermediate) Stage
At the end of growing stage, hair stops growing. During this 2 weeks period, deeper part of hair follicle start to collapse.
3. Telogen (Resting/Shedding) Stage
During shedding stage, the hair follicle rest completely for about 100 days. Up to 100 Telogen hairs are shed everyday.
At any point of time, about 90% of hairs are at Anagen stage and about 10% at Catagen and Telogen stage.
Different types of Hair Loss
1. Normal/Ageing Hair Loss
As mentioned before, up to 100 Telogen hairs are shed everyday, so it is completely normal to lose up to 100 hairs per day. However with age, Anagen (Growing) Stage often shorter and Telogen (Resting/Shedding) Stage often longer, resulting in gradual thinning hair in both men and women.
2. Alopecia Areata (Spot Baldness)
Spot Baldness normally affecting small part of scalp or body. Often heredity combine with environmental triggers (emotional stress or pathogen) causes this type of baldness.
3. Alopecia Totalis
It is a similar type to Alopecia Areata, however it is affecting the whole part of head or body. It is still unclear what causes Alopecia Totalis, however it is believed that stress may have been one of the trigger.
4. Androgenic Alopecia (Male Pattern Baldness)
Characterized by hair receding from the lateral sides of the forehead, known as ‘receding hairline‘, Male Pattern Baldness may also develop on top (vertex) of the head. Although it is normally starting to affect men in their late 20s, Male Pattern Baldness can affect younger men too.
The trigger of Male Pattern Baldness is DHT (Dihydrotestosterone), a powerful sex hormone, body, and facial hair growth promoter that can adversely affect the prostate as well as the hair located on the head. DHT gradually shortens the Anagen (Growing) Stage and possibly lengthens Telogen (Resting/Shedding) Stage of hair, resulting in thinning hair over the years until the hair is completely gone.
Although DHT is affecting men more than women, DHT may also cause Female Pattern Baldness. Sadly, reducing DHT level by taking prescribed medication often effecting libido (lowering libido) and causing other side-effects, therefore many men do not feel comfortable taking prescribed medication to combat Male Pattern Baldness.
Due to my very own thinning hair problem (a genetic Male Pattern Baldness inherited from my father), I took prescribed medication and made regular visit to Trichologists and Hair Loss Therapists. However, after experiencing extreme unwanted side effects, I decided to stop this treatment and searching for an alternative treatment.
It was very frustrating to see my thinning hair getting worst and worst, but giving up is not my nature. I started to experiment with essential oils (Thanks to ITHMA - The Institute of Traditional Herbal Medicine and Aromatherapy, where I spent a year to study essential oils with The Europe’s Leading Aromatherapists in The United Kingdom and France). However, I found out later that essential oils alone can not produce optimum results. It took me almost 8 years before I came up with the final formulas:
Scalp Stimulator
Hair Growth Tonic
Scalp Stimulator and Hair Growth Tonic should be used every day.
Gently massage Scalp Stimulator onto scalp in the morning or evening concentrating on the effected areas (e.g.: vertex - top and front including the lateral sides of the forehead) for a few minutes then leave it for one hour before rinse it thoroughly with water.
At night before bed time, gently massage Hair Growth Tonic onto scalp concentrating on the effected areas (e.g.: vertex - top and front including the lateral sides of the forehead). Hair Growth Tonic is water-based, quickly absorbed and non-greasy, so you can either leave it or rinse it with water when you wake up in the morning.
Please be aware that when gently massaging your scalp with Scalp Stimulator and Hair Growth Tonic, you may find some hairs fall, this is absolutely normal since these are hairs at Telogen (Resting/Shedding) Stage and these hairs need to go before Anagen (Growing) Stage can be started. Both Scalp Stimulator and Hair Growth Tonic works by maximising the hair growth at Anagen (Growing) Stage.
