Advanced Natural Suncare
Facts:
- Ultraviolet rays (Sun rays) is the most significant factor in the skin ageing process which cause the skin to sag and trigger the appearance of lines and wrinkles due to damaged collagen and elastin. However the most worrying thing is the development of skin cancer due to excessive sun exposure.
There are 3 types of commonly known UV rays: UVA, UVB and UVC.
* UVA is the most tricky ageing ray as it is penetrating deeper to epidermis (the deeper skin layer) and damaging collagen and elastin, causing the skin to sag and triggering lines and wrinkles. UVA which also can burn the skin cells, is remain active even on a cloudy day and able to get through glass (window), makes it as one of the most tricky UV ray to deal with.
* UVB is mainly responsible for sunburn, which is a sign of damaged DNA and other proteins due to oxidation. However, prolong exposure to UVB is increasing the risk of developing skin cancer.
* UVC is luckily filtered out by the ozone, otherwise no human being will survive as it destroys DNA.
- Using a tanning machine increases the risk of developing skin cancer and speeding up the skin ageing process, similar to sunbathing.
Expert Solution - Suncare:
- Always use a skin protector with at least SPF15 which blocks out about 93 per cent of UVB.
- Look for a sun cream/lotion which contains micronised Zinc Oxide, as it is stable and providing better protection against ageing UVA.
- Try to avoid prolong sun exposure between 10pm and 3pm as the sun is likely in very strong position during this period of time. This is particularly important for those with pale (fair) skin.
- Be sensible with the sun as sun-exposure helps our body to produce vitamin D for stronger bone. The common rule is if you have naturally pale (fair) skin, your body needs less sun-exposure to produce vitamin D whilst if you have naturally dark skin, your body needs longer sun-exposure to produce vitamin D. However sunburn (tanning) should be avoided at all.
